A few months ago we finished a project that I waited
8 years to even start
. When we 1st moved into our home the room you walked into was a room I knew I wanted to have all for myself. I had thoughts of snuggling in front of the fireplace reading, relaxing or watching TV. It was and still is the quietest room in the house. The previous owners had a cream colored carpet that was in
pretty good shape, so we decided to keep it. In the beginning years with our new home, the girls liked to lay on the carpet and since it was in ok shape there was no rush to rip it out. 8 years later, the girls are never on the carpet and the rug was just gross. It is the room where we had the most open space so this is where we set up for parties, entertained etc. The rug really needed to go!
Of course I don't have a picture of the rug before the demo started (see the small piece in the corner?), but here is a shot while in the mist of the demo.
The Befores
Notice the old layout of the room? A small closet once was in the middle of the room? Yikes!
The walls are still not painted in this picture, but the back of the bookcases are complete!
For the floors, the hubby and I decided on a dark, slightly weathered look. Since the room is on a concrete foundation we had to go with an engineered wood. Our choice for floors - A dark, slightly distressed Birch. Isn't she purty??
The hubby also decided that he wanted to lay the floors down on an angle. I never saw this done at the time but trusted him completely. Am I ever glad he did.
While in mist of the demo I decided to paint the walls (
Sharkey Grey by Martha). I love the color combo with the rich dark navy blue (
Rogue Blue Valspar) I picked for the backs of the bookcases.
Bookcases during (notice the contrasting paints)
After (love!)
This room also has a huge fireplace that we use
all Fall and Winter long. This is mainly
my room because of this fireplace. I just love sitting in front of it. Either with a book or glass of wine in hand. Sometimes both (multitasker here). The old rug took on some damage due to flying embers. We did not want the new floors taking on any damage so we decided to lay tiles down in front of the fireplace. We also repeated this look in front of the front door. We added glass tiles for an accent. I love this look. Completely different, but makes the room so much more!
The fireplace tiles (minus the molding)
The front door (minus the molding)
Since we completed this project, the door has been repainted. It is now a gorgeous shade of yellow (
Hazy Dawn Valspar). I am loving the color combo that came together for this room. Greyish walls, yellow door and navy blue accents.
Here a few more shots of the new floors.
a picture with flash (at night)
The room still needs a rug, pillows, curtains, artwork etc. but the floors are done and that makes me so so happy.
