Making my own Ceiling Medallion

So what do you do when you are refinishing a hallway, you take down the old lighting fixture to put up your new fixture and realize uh oh - We have a (small) problem?
Doesn't quite cover the hole now does it?
Lesson learned to take measurements 1st before buying lighting fixtures. Off to Home Depot the hubby and I went to try and fix this mess. Our 1st thought was to buy a ceiling medallion. Have you ever seen the price of those ceiling medallions? Holy crap are they ever expensive. I told the hubby there was no way we were paying $60 for a piece of plastic. We can just make our own. He didn't quite follow what I was suggesting.
I explained that we could buy a piece of plywood, then I would trace a pattern on to it to mimic the edges of the fixture. This would cover up the hole, while making it personal and unique. Plus save us lots of money in the process.
He still did not follow. He needed a visual.
So I took the wood home, traced out the pattern (mimicking the fixtures edges) and asked him if he followed now? Luckily he did!
He even offered to cut out the pattern with bandsaw for me. He's such a good hubby.
Once we had it cut, I sanded down the edges and the front side of the medallion. Then I applied a few coats of white glossy spray (cheap Walmart Spray). The final look is just what I wanted - something unique and cheap - All for about $5.

Isn't it lovely? I'll have more on this hallway makeover later...

Great job! I know they cost so much in the store and now I know what hubby can make me for my dining room. Thanks for sharing!
